Kanchipuram Silk is a type of silk saree made in the Kanchipuram region in Tamil Nadu, India. These sarees are worn as bridal & special occasion sarees by most women in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh.
According to Hindi mythology, the Kanchi Silk weavers are considered as the descendants of sage markanda,who was considered to be the weaver for the gods themselves.
The Kanchipuram Sarees are woven from pure “Malluberry Silk thread” and Golden Zari which is woven in South India. Sarees are distinguished by their wide contrast borders and colors.The Temple border,Checks,Stripes and Floral (buttas) are traditional designs.
The patterns and designs were inspired with images and scriptures in South Indian temples or Natural features like Leaves, Birds and animals. Kanchipuram Sarees woven with heavy silk and gold zari are considered to be special and worn on Occasions and Festivities!
There are several types of Khancipuram Saree, including following:
Madisar
Madisar is a nine or ten yard long sari. The name madisar is typically associated with tamil brahmins. Today, madisar is hardly worn as daily wear. But women do drape the madisar on select festive occasions and religious ceremonies. The first madisar a woman wears is on her marriage.
Now a days madisar is being worn in other colors according to people’s choices. But the red or maroon color worn on wedding is considered to be auspicious. This Kanjeepuram red silk saree is different because the jari work is the same on the outside and inside. There was never a social media movement to keep the madisar Saree alike, unlike the regular 6 yards Saree. In recent times, many artists have inspired women to sport the madisar.
Portia
This traditional Kanchipuram in a korvai-weaving technique is a timeless classic saree in a elegant parrot green with purple jari border stand out from others due to intricate weaving patterns and the quality of the silk. The word “ korvai “ in Tamil means ‘ in sync’. The korvai-weaving technique is passed on from one generation of weavers to another. The hallmark of the KORVAI is it’s vivid colors and contrasting borders. This saree is hand woven by workers in the weaving unit of Arya Nair design studio based in Kanchipuram.
Vijayanagara
At the time of vijayanagara dynasty, this became popular and was worn in all the passions like birth, marriage, different ceremonies. This saree is woven in Kanchipuram which is Tamil Nadu. It consists of pure mulberry silk, pure gold and silver zari.
I also wore this saree for my 25th wedding anniversary and I looked like a young bride. Last but not the least every south indian's bride's dream is to dress up in Kanchipuram saree .
Traditional
This is a Beautiful dark blue silk saree woven with Zari flower motifs all over the saree and Love birds near the borders of the saree. Totally different colored Maroon borders with flowers and leaves motifs are added attraction for the saree. Peacocks, flowers and beautiful geometric designs and the tassels are the very elegant decorations to enhance the beauty of the saree. This is a very traditional style saree.
Fabric
This fabric is an inherent part of several traditional and religious ceremonies. Kanchipuram silks have created the main occupation for several in the city of Kanchipuram. The silk bears the images of all the scriptures embossed on the walls of the temples of the Kanchipuram village. Around 250-300 threads would be woven into the wept. This eventually allows the saree to remain sturdy.
Generally, the sari used in a Kanjeevaram silk saree would be in gold and silver with silver running in first, coated with gold later. The sarees woven hence from this silk are mostly hand woven to design the best collection. The famous weavers of the city of Kanchipuram have developed the art of converting this fabric into beautifully designed sarees.
Pallu Saree
Very pleasing pastel colored thick silk saree with attractive orange colored borders with “pottu Kolam” or “Rangoli with dots” very nicely woven with zari. The pallu has a very traditional theme of “lamps and rangoli” very nicely woven. The beautiful tassels highlight the beauty of the pallu of the saree.
Khanceevaram
This Impressive Kancheevaram saree carry a classical touch. The impeccable look and feel of this saree crafted from fine silk is truly sensational. This beautiful beetroot red saree is elegantly completed with self thread weave or jacquard all over. The border is in a darker red colour with yazhi, leaves and floral designs elegantly woven with golden zari. And in the pallu we can see elongated mango which is inspired by Persian weave and known and as Pessia.
The other designs present in the pallu are Rudhraksham, geometrical pattern kattam, annam, and coin weave inspiration from banaras. This saree with its enriching shade of colour and weave make an Indian woman look her traditional best on any occasion.
